Volume 3 - Chapter 3: Shion-san Came
The usual lunch break. The usual class 1-9 classroom.
As he always did, Kyouya sat across from Yokomizo with their desks pushed together. But as Kyouya was pecking away at his lunch...
"Excuse me, is Shinomiya-kun here?"
A voice rang out from beyond the doorway, and Kyouya turned his head in surprise.
It was Shion.
Kyouya hurriedly stood up from his seat and headed toward her.
"Shion-san, what are you doing here?"
Just a while ago, the Prez had come to the classroom and caused quite a ruckus; Kyouya had prepared himself this time just in case.
"I finished reading the book you lent me 2 days ago. I thought I would return it."
"Just give it back to me during club time."
"Actually, I can't come to the club today."
"Then keep it until tomorrow. I don't mind."
"No, I really think I should return it now. Isn't that just proper—"
Halfway through her sentence, Shion began to notice Kyouya's attitude, and the color drained from her face.
"Am I causing you trouble? I'm sorry. Please tell me if I'm doing something I shouldn't be."
"Ah, no, that's not it."
Now that he had experienced the Prez's visit, Kyouya wanted to repel Shion as fast as possible. He did feel bad for her, but in a way, he was protecting Shion as well.
"Wow, she's so pretty!"
Inevitably, they were discovered by the girls of the class. Soon, they were both surrounded by a sea of girls.
Shion was probably not aware of it herself, but she was quite striking in appearance. Her long hair that reached down to the back of her knees, her figure, her face, and of course her height. She didn't look out of place in the clubroom, but compared to the girls in Kyouya's class, it was obvious how much she stood out. It was hard to imagine them as the same species.
"Kyoro-kun, h-help!"
Shion's troubled face poked out from above the sea of black hair, and looked pleadingly in Kyouya's direction.
"Your hair's so pretty!" "You're so tall!" The girls crowded around Shion and showered her with compliments.
But Kyouya knew Shion wasn't the type to welcome praise. Her genius intellect and stunning beauty were not necessarily good things for her. Kyouya had heard that from Shion before.
Kyouya came to Shion's rescue as her brave knight.
"Guys, please give her some room. Come on, you're scaring her. Isn't that right, Shion-san?"
Kyouya stood between Shion and the crowd valiantly.
"Hey, not fair, Shinomiya, you should introduce her. She's that senpai you keep talking about, right? The genius?"
Kyouya held back the boys that were now also looming before them. The one who demanded an introduction was, unbelievably, in a relationship. It was Shinjou, one half of the "godlike couple".
"Senpai, I heard you were a genius? What can you do? What's it like being a genius?"
Shinjou had just blurted out the questions it took Kyouya 3 months to work up the courage to ask in a matter of seconds. Along with a headache, Kyouya could feel a faint sense of jealousy and defeat.
In any case, Kyouya had to protect Shion right now. He was but a shield, and that would be good enough.
"Stop that, Shinjou-kun. That's rude."
"Huh? Really? My bad, I'm pretty dense when it comes to stuff like this. Oh, hey, that book!"
It was good that he apologized right away, but Shinjou quickly noticed the book Shion was holding in her hands.
"I'm reading that novel too! It's pretty lewd, isn't it? There's not just kisses, either. Hey, did you know, that author, Ninomiya Shuuji is actually—"
"No."
Shion replied in a monotone voice with an emotionless expression.
"I do not read this for such a reason. It's a high class work of literature about love and death. Because it tackles love so sincerely, indeed there are the scenes you've described, but needless to say, according to Freud, love and death are inseparably connected. In post-modernism, the two concepts are seen as opposite sides of the same coin. And so—"
Kyouya dragged the rambling Shion away from his classmates.
"Huh? Was I not supposed to say that?"
Shinjou had finally realized. Kyouya nodded towards him weakly.
"M-My bad..."
Again, it was good that he apologized right away, but Shion was not yet ready to leave, continuing to rant about psychology.
"It's ok. I'm used to it."
Shinjou looked towards Shion, who was still spewing excuses.
"What is this cute animal?"
Shinjou spoke nearly the same words he had used recently with the Prez.
Kyouya felt a sense of validation. So it really was cute. Kyouya had gained a little more confidence in his judgement.
Classmates: You're so tall! Your hair is so pretty!
